Counseling & Psychological Services Diversity & Inclusion Statement

CAPS (Counseling & Psychological Services) promotes overall health and well-being by helping students overcome obstacles that may otherwise prevent them from attaining academic, personal, and professional goals. Our mission is to foster the psychological health and well-being of our students in order to enable them to thrive, develop, and achieve academic success. We embrace the diversity that is embodied in the community we serve, and we acknowledge that the individual needs of our students are unique. Thus, we treat each person with respect and dignity. Through collaboration with others across Seton Hall, we work to provide programs and services that build a supportive community for all.

As an extension of our mission, we hold a strong commitment to the diverse Seton Hall Community that we serve and strive to promote equity and inclusion. We recognize and acknowledge that implicit bias, oppression, discrimination, prejudice, and inequitable systems of power and privilege impact our students and campus community. These factors can affect individual mental and emotional health, sense of belonging on campus, and academic achievement. As a department serving the campus community, we strive to:

  • Create a safe environment that respects and welcomes individuals from diverse backgrounds and provide a space to feel heard and appreciated.
  • Affirm and honor diversity in all its forms, including but not limited to: race, culture, ethnicity, religion/spirituality, sex, national origin, immigration status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, physical ability, political beliefs, status as a veteran, age, marital status, body size, socioeconomic class, and the intersection of all social identities.
  • Recognize and reduce mental health care disparities that have traditionally affected healthcare delivery through targeted outreach.
  • Continually refine our multicultural awareness, competence, and humility as a staff through professional development, engaging in ongoing self-reflection, and being open to feedback from the campus community we aim to serve.

We understand that inclusiveness and social justice require an ongoing endeavor, and we can never assume to have reached a final point.  To that end, we invite students, faculty, and staff to schedule a time to visit and share any experiences, feedback, or concerns they may have so that we can
