Presenter, Lee Miller, giving a lecture on strategic influencing.Often, the key to success in your career, and beyond, depends on your ability to learn what motivates people to persuade them to do what you want—while also ensuring that their needs are met.

Now, influencing skills become both more important and more nuanced as we move beyond the pandemic into a variety of work arrangements, including more people working partially or fully remote. The new program curriculum focuses on how to operate successfully as a leader in a hybrid workplace, with emphasis on:

  • How to effectively exert influence in a hybrid workplace where much of your influencing will be virtual;
  • The psychology of virtual influencing and effective use of each of the different mediums of virtual communication; and
  • The issues that arise when part of your workforce is remote, including how to address disadvantages remote workers may face in terms of impact and advancement.

Through Strategic Influencing and Communication, participants begin to understand and approach influencing in a systemic way, becoming aware of the context in which influencing takes place and how the roles of individuals and other factors can determine outcomes.

Strategic Influencing and Communication for Women is designed specifically to teach women to think about influencing differently and to approach efforts to influence others in a thoughtful, systematic way. The program provides the key essentials of influencing as well as how effective application of these skills differs for women and men.

Through Advanced Strategic Influencing and Communication, participants learn how to influence groups and navigate organizational politics. They will learn to develop an influencing plan while considering the roles of various players in the decision-making process and building on the skills developed in the prerequisite workshop. They will also have the opportunity to observe, participate, and ask questions to improve their influencing skills and to learn from real life practical examples. They will explore and perform small group exercises, thereby practicing and mastering various influencing skills.

Each workshop is led by Lee E. Miller, adjunct professor of management in the Stillman School of Business and a consultant, executive/career coach and corporate trainer in the fields of leadership, influencing and negotiating. He is the co-author of the critically acclaimed A Woman's Guide to Successful Negotiating, which was selected by the Huffington Post as one of the "16 Books Aspiring Woman Leaders Need to be Reading." His other book, Up Influence, Power and the U Perspective: The Art of Getting What You Want, was reviewed recently by Forbes.com, noting the intersection of "Convince, Collaborate and Create" as a powerful framework.
