On Saturday, December 3rd, the Center for Community Research and Engagement co-hosted a conference titled “Teach-in on Social Justice, Catholic teachings, and a lifetime of commitment” with the Archdiocese of Newark and Local 32 BJ Service Employees International Union. The event gave students the opportunity to learn about the labor movement, its connection to Catholic teachings, and social justice-oriented careers.

Over 50 students participated in the conference-style event, and they had the opportunity to speak with members and staff from the labor movement in roundtable discussions throughout the day. Students heard from several speakers including Timothy Hoffman, the Director of the CCRE, who helped frame the day, and Father Timothy Graff, the Director of Social Concerns for the Archdiocese of Newark, who described the connection between the labor movement and the Catholic Church. Students also heard from a Seton Hall University alumnus, Adrian Orozco ‘19, who served as the keynote speaker.

“This event gave students the chance to hear from members of the labor movement directly about their jobs and possible career opportunities where they can make a difference through their work”, said Hoffman. “It is so important for students to find ways to channel their passion for making a difference in their communities and events like this show students the possibilities that exist for them to make positive change in the world.”

The CCRE, founded in 1997, operates out of the College of Arts and Sciences and coordinates the activities of the University as it implements service learning and community-based research on campus.
