Catholic Study and Biology Student Giselle Pineda Wins 2020 Petersheim Student Travel Award

Catholic studies and biology student Giselle Pineda won the 2020 Petersheim Student Travel Award. Giselle presented online on Monday, April 20. The title of Giselle's presentation was "A Ray of Hope in a Country full of Sorrow: Saint Oscar Romero."

"As a first-generation Salvadoran in the United States, Saint Romero's life not only allowed me to connect to my native roots, but most importantly taught me deep faith and love of God can change the world. The 'option for the poor' has been a part of Christianity since the Early church, but very few know what it truly means. Saint Romero provides an excellent example of someone who not only knew what it meant but also advocated for it. Therefore, 39 years after his assassination, Oscar Arnulfo Romero, was declared a martyr and saint. Saint Romero became known as the 'voice of the voiceless' due to his advocacy for 'option for the poor.'"

The 2020 Petersheim Academic Exposition "Share, Honor, Unite" took place online from Monday, April 20 until Friday, April 24, 2020. This celebration of scholastic accomplishments involved undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, administrators, and staff from among the various disciplines. This year, the Academic Exposition was held online.
