Entrepreneurial expert Bruce Freeman, instructor in the Department of Management in the Stillman School of Business, will be presenting "Turning Adversity into Opportunity" at the Livingston Public Library on Saturday, November 17 at 10:30 a.m.
Freeman was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2008, from which he has lost the ability to walk. Accompanying this diagnosis was a desire to motivate and encourage his community through his work and presentations. In the 10 years he has been combating MS, he has crafted six different motivational presentations, each discussing a different way to build success in trying times.
"Most people have had adversity in their lives. An individual can view it as a problem, a challenge or an opportunity. In my case, I made my MS an opportunity," said Freeman.
Freeman began his teaching career at Seton Hall University in 2004 as an adjunct professor of entrepreneurial studies. He has received five Outstanding Teaching Awards from the Stillman School of Business and, most recently, earned the Adjunct Teacher of the Year award.
"Bruce has such a big impact on our students. He is a teacher, a mentor and an outstanding example of what can be accomplished with perseverance and determination," said Steven Lorenzet, associate dean of the Stillman School of Business. "We are proud to have him among the ranks of our teaching faculty."
In addition to teaching and motivational speaking, Freeman is an entrepreneur, author, and a syndicated national columnist for the Tribune News Service. For many years he wrote a bi-weekly column, "The Small Business Professor," which provided small business owners with entrepreneurial advice and tips to help aid growth and success, and is published in more than 1,200 news outlets across the U.S. and Canada.
In 2006, Freeman was awarded the Small Business Journalist of the Year award by the U.S. Small Business Administration. In 2008, Freeman co-wrote a book with fellow entrepreneur Karin Abarbanel titled Birthing the Elephant: The Woman's Go-For-It! Guide to Overcoming the Big Challenges of Launching a Business.
