Amsterdam: Gordon and Breach Publishers, 1998

Ritual Myth and the Modern Text Martha C. Carpentier, Ph.D.
Department of English

Tracing the predominance of Hellenic maternal archetypes in the writings of James Joyce, T.S. Eliot and Virginia Woolf back to anthropologist Jane Harrison, this book discusses Harrison's influence over the modernist movement (late 19th and early 20th centuries). The author analyzes in detail the influence of Harrison's work on the works of these authors and shows how Harrison's more feminist view of Greek religion was inspirational for Joyce, Eliot and Woolf.
