Global Studies
The Graduate Certificate in Global Studies is a customized inter-disciplinary initiative between the College of Education and Human Services and the School of Diplomacy and International Relations. The program prepares new and experienced teachers to bring a comprehensive understanding of the modern global society directly to the classroom through modes that address the increasing diversity of culture, ethnicity and spiritual beliefs. Upon completion, students will be better able to navigate their environment utilizing skills that are intrinsic to current social and political discourse in a competitive world.
Why Global Studies?
Greater emphasis has been placed on addressing global competence as part of teacher professional development. As classrooms continue to diversify, globally competent educators possess keen insight into the perspectives of others, are better able to communicate ideas with diverse audiences, and are inspired to be active participants in improving conditions in the world around them. Global competence is also reflected in state learning standards for Social Studies, specifically in the model curricula for US and World History taught at the high school level.

"We need more teachers who understand the broader scope of community building. They need to have expanded their knowledge through research of the many cultures that make up our present day classes. It's incredibly important for students to understand the world outside of their school, so they will be able to effectively contribute to it when they leave. It helps make the world a smaller place."
Michael Catelli '08K-12 Supervisor for Social Studies, World Languages & ESL – Somerset Hills School District

The Graduate Certificate in Global Studies
Our youth learn from reading the news that they are part of a larger world, and that what goes on in the world touches their lives personally in many ways. This program seeks to help educators by providing important knowledge about regions and issues in the world and also help them develop their skillsets in the classroom. In this way, they can better train students with the skills that they’ll need to navigate a diverse and competitive world.
