School of Health and Medical Sciences

Recognizing the need for gastroenterology subspecialists in the provision of healthcare services in the United States, the School of Health & Medical Sciences offers the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program.

The fellowship is a three-year program. Five fellows rotate in the following state-of-the-art hospitals and healthcare facilities:

Fellows rotate predominately between St. Josesph’s Regional Medical Center and Saint Michael’s Regional Medical Center and spend two months on the hepatology service at UMDNJ in their second year. The patient population seeking care at the three institutions provides a wide spectrum of gastroenterology and liver pathology that provide an extensive learning experience.

Beginning in the first year, fellows are exposed to basic diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower endoscopy. In subsequent years, they become more involved in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, such as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, and the teaching of junior fellows. Fellows provide consultative services at the two main hospitals, where there is a close working relationship with the Surgical and Radiology departments.

The fellows actively participate in:

  • Research Conference, monthly;
  • Pathology Conference, bimonthly;
  • Clinics at St. Joseph’s and St. Michael’s, weekly;
  • Education of medical residents and students;
  • Clinical research and subsequent presentations at regional and national meetings; and
  • Divisional conferences.

Dedicated to providing trainees with a quality learning experience, faculty are highly educated, having trained in hospitals around the country and in highly regarded residency programs. Three key faculty members have more than 70 years of cumulative clinical and teaching experience in the field. A devoted voluntary faculty is an additional asset to the program.
