Esports Recap: Fall 2023 Season Highlights

The Seton Hall Esports program has concluded another successful fall season in League of Legends, Rocket League and Super Smash Brothers Ultimate (SSBU). From joining the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) to the SSBU squad's first-ever playoff victory, this season was marked by unprecedented growth, unparalleled determination, and a series of groundbreaking firsts.
Seton Hall Esports Manager, Victor Gomez, expressed immense pride in the teams' achievements, stating, “This season has been a testament to the dedication and talent of our esports athletes. We've seen tremendous growth, especially in overcoming challenges and seizing victories in the face of adversity.”
League of Legends
The League of Legends team underwent a transformative year, utilizing this season as a crucial building block for the future. Concluding with a 2-5 record in the NACE Varsity Plus league, players honed their distinct playstyles, significantly contributing to the team's development. The integration of a dynamic 10-man roster showcased the depth of talent at Seton Hall, promising a formidable presence in the seasons ahead.
Rocket League
The Rocket League team established itself as a powerhouse, wrapping up the regular season with an impressive 5-1 record. Their debut in the NACE Varsity Premiere league earned significant attention and respect. Despite showcasing unwavering commitment and sportsmanship in their bid for a national playoff spot, Seton Hall’s Rocket League season ended in the eighth round of the Last Chance Qualifier Tournament, after facing a defeat against Harrisburg.
Super Smash Brothers Ultimate
The SSBU team's triumphant season was characterized by growth and redemption. Securing second place in the NACE Varsity Plus East Conference 1’s regular season play, the SSBU team entered the playoffs as underdogs and emerged as victors. Through sheer determination, the Pirates executed a thrilling reverse sweep to claim victory against undefeated Widener University. This historic win not only solidified Seton Hall Esports’ place in SSBU’s competitive scene but also showcased the resilience and skill of the university’s talented players.
Overwatch 2
The Overwatch 2 club team exceeded all expectations, clinching the top spot in their division with an impressive 6-1 record during the regular season. Despite encountering a formidable opponent, Harrisburg, in the Open Plus Division of NACE, their valiant effort showcased immense potential. This club team's outstanding performance marks a significant step in establishing Seton Hall in the Overwatch arena. Their compelling performance has positioned them as a team to watch, potentially earmarking them as a future addition to Seton Hall's official Esports lineup.
As the Seton Hall Pirates continue to tackle new challenges and ascend to new heights, one certainty remains: the future appears incredibly promising for Seton Hall Esports.
