Wireless Connectivity on Campus
The University has a state of the art Cisco campus wireless network which provides wireless access across the entire campus. The campus is 100% wireless enabled. The network supports WPA (Wireless Protected Access) security and encryption. Users without WPA security cannot connect to the campus wireless network except for in the University library. The University library has open wireless network access for visitors who wish take advantage of library resources using a personally owned device with wireless capability. The network also supports wireless network "roaming", that is, customers are able to move around campus without needing to reboot their computers in order to re-connect to the wireless network.
Prerequisites:
Customers must have a wireless enabled device utilizing WPA with the SHU encryption key to utilize the campus wireless network on campus. The only exception is the University Library which utilizes an open network.
Process:
All University issued laptop computers are configured to automatically connect to the wireless network. University IT Services has as its goal to provide wireless network service to all areas of the South Orange campus. Please call the Technology Help Desk at (973) 275-2222 if you experience any difficulty connecting to the campus wireless network.
Troubleshooting problems connecting to the campus wireless network:
- If you are having difficulty connecting to the campus wireless network, you may need to have the campus WPA code installed on your laptop. This can be done at PC Support Services in the lower level of Corrigan Hall during their normal hours of operation.
- If you are unable to connect to the campus wireless network within any building on the South Orange campus, please report the location to the Technology Help Desk. University IT Services will install additional wireless access points as necessary to ensure you can connect to the campus wireless network from every classroom and office on campus.
- If you have an older University issued laptop (a ThinkPad model R40 or earlier), you may need to have a new wireless card installed in your computer in order to support WPA security. University issued laptops will be upgraded at no cost to the user. This can be done at PC Support Services in the lower level of Corrigan Hall during their normal hours of operation.
- If you own your own laptop and it does not support WPA security, PC Support Services can provide a compatible wireless card at cost.
Using network “roaming”:
- PC Support Services recommends that, in order to save time, you not reboot your laptop computer when moving between classrooms or buildings.
- To utilize the roaming feature, suspend your laptop (e.g., by pressing Fn - F4) prior to setting off for another location on campus. When you reach your desired location and re-open your laptop, the IBM Access Connections agent should re-establish the connection to the campus wireless network within a minute or two without the need for you to reboot your laptop.
Upgrading your IBM Access Connections:
- Some older models of University-issued ThinkPad computers do not have the latest version of the IBM Access Connection agent on their laptop. We recommend that all ThinkPad users use the latest version of the IBM Access Connection agent to connect to the campus wireless network.
- The Technology Help Desk can direct you to a Web page that will detect which version of the IBM Access Connection agent is installed on your computer and, if needed, update this agent.
- You can also bring your laptop to PC Support Services in Corrigan Hall and a technician can perform this check.
Unauthorized Devices on the network:
- Unauthorized network devices installed by users without the assistance of University IT Services can interfere with the campus network.
- Installation of these devices, such as hubs or wireless access points by LinkSys, NetGear, 3Comm, and the like, may be considered a violation of the University's policy on the appropriate use of computer facilities.
- If University IT Services detects an unauthorized network wireless access point, their policy is to work with the appropriate University officials to remove the device from the network.
- If you have installed your own network hub, router, or wireless access point without the assistance of University IT Services, we ask that you remove it immediately.
