Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)

Date Started: Jun 16, 2008
Status:Pending

Project Description

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships allow qualified students to conduct research under the direction of a full-time faculty member in their area of study. Research in any academic field is eligible. The application must be completed by a student and a full time member of the University faculty. Research projects should use available information technology as part of the project (for example, using a laptop computer to capture or analyze data, creating a web site to disseminate the results of the research project, using digital audio, video or photography to record or analyze sound or movement, etc.).

Each fellowship, valued at approximately $4,000.00, is funded by the Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center (TLTC) and includes tuition for an (optional) one-credit summer course, student summer pay of $2,500.00 for eight weeks in July and August, $1,000.00 stipend for the faculty mentor overseeing the project, and up to $500 for software, equipment, or travel if applicable.

In order to be eligible, the student must be a full-time undergraduate student with a grade point average of 3.0 or greater who is pre-registered for the upcoming semester. The student may register for a one-credit research or independent study course during the summer if approved by the faculty mentor. Any additional summer courses the student takes may not coincide with the time of the research project. The student must follow standard university procedures for work-study students. Outside employment during this period is not recommended.
