Project Description
The eighth iteration of CDI took place in 2005. Two grants were awarded. A description of each project is detailed below.
Developmental Mathematics Large Course Redesign
The Developmental Math program, which serves over 300 freshman each year, incorporates MyMathLab as a self-paced, self-directed tool that allows students to interact with the material. Student and instructor time in the class room has been replaced by “working” time which required students to use MyMathLab in a computer laboratory setting dedicated to this purpose.
Freshman Studies
Freshman Studies CDI is in its fourth and final year. The final Phase of the CDI, Phase three, explored the use of blogs to engage incoming students. The department created a blog and podcasts that contains pertinent information to all new students.
As the CDI comes to a close discussions are currently taking place on how to continue to extend the work that has been completed over the past four years. Potential projects include the integration of digital stories into the eportfolio. These digital stories might include mentor interviews of students about their first year experience that can then be shared on the Freshman Studies blog and/or the department website. The Freshman Studies department would also like to organize a showcase to share the first year experience portfolios with the larger Seton Hall Community. Finally, Freshman Studies, Institutional Research and members of the Core are at the preliminary stages of investigating the possibility of moving toward a “holistic” eportfolio where the Freshman Studies eportfolios would be integrated with the Core courses, starting with the Journey of Transformation. Pilot groups will include Freshman Studies mentors paired with Core I faculty.
