Project Description

During the 2007-08 academic year three CDI projects were launched; (1) Elementary Spanish Course Redesign, (2) Financial Accounting, and (3) MBA Pre-Qualification.

Elementary Spanish Course Redesign
The Elementary Spanish Course Redesign CDI has completed it’s second year and the PI, Jorge Lopez-Cotina, has requested a third-year extension. During the Spring 08 semester funding for the new placement test was received from the Freshman Studies Department and the test will be available for incoming Freshman in the Fall. A link to the assessment will be added to the Elementary Spanish blackboard courses for students to access. Lastly, training software for the assessment has been installed in the Language Resource Center and workshops will be offered to instructors teaching the Refresher course this Fall.

Financial Accounting
The goal of redesigning BACC 2103 Financial Accounting is to address several fundamental issues in financial accounting. First, it will better prepare all business students for careers in business by giving them a stronger understanding of how to read and interpret financial statements. Second, active learning techniques will emphasize building students’ financial analysis skills, rather than just increasing their knowledge of how to account for specific transactions. Third, the shift to more dynamic and important topics should build students’ interest in the accounting major, and better prepare accounting majors for future accounting courses.

The PI’s have expressed interest in creating the templates based on the Quality Matters™ rubric and will be working to provide a consistent learning experience for their students. The CDI team has submitted an extension to continue the project for a third year.

MBA Pre-Qualification
As a response to the Stillman School’s growing need for an effective delivery system for certain graduate course requirements, this CDI looks to address findings that traditional in-class delivery of course content is inadequate for some groups of students.

Two courses, BMBA 8018 and BMBA 8019, have successfully passed the Quality Matters™ review. BTAX 6009 and BTAX 7012 have been redesigned to meet the Quality Matters™ standards and a master template was created for future tax courses to provide a consistent environment for students.  BMBA 8010 is currently being reviewed based on the QM standards.
