Last Revised: October 1, 2002
Policy Description
Use of the campus e-mail system is provided to the campus community to improve communication and, as with all computer systems and networks owned or operated by Seton Hall University, the University "...has specific rights of access; regulation of use; and resource allocation and management." (Appropriate Use of Computer Facilities. I.1.)
In order to conserve University e-mail/network resource, all "mass mailings" also known as Broadcasts are processed through the appropriate offices:
- Office of the Executive Vice President
- Office of Mission and Ministry
- Community Alert (Student Affairs)
- Broadcast Account (IT Services)
In addition to e-mail communications with the University from the above offices, messages of interest appropriate for distribution to the University community can be posted via the Community Announcements database, University Calendar of Events and within Blackboard. Instructions on how to post to these databases can be received by calling the Help Desk at (973) 275-2222.
Bypassing the above offices in attempting to send unsolicited e-mails to large numbers of users is in violation of the above guidelines and will be penalized according to current policies governing employees and students. Sending and/or forwarding chain letters by the indiscriminate use of the Seton Hall University Name and Address Book is an example of such a violation.
In addition, all use of e-mail through University owned or operated computer resources is governed by the applicable local, state and federal laws.
