Policy Description
As a University we are committed to creating and maintaining the
most fire safe and emergency ready environment for our students. We do
this in a number of ways.
First, we work collaboratively with our resources on campus and in the
town of South Orange.
Second, we have installed and monitor the best in fire suppression
systems for housing facilities.
Finally, we seek to educate our current and prospective students along
with their family members about the history of the Boland Hall fire and
all we do to prevent such an event from ever occurring again.
A primary means for that education is our policy of unannounced monthly
health and safety inspections in our housing facilities. Professional
housing staff members visit each student’s room, not only to inspect
for safety related concerns but to connect with students and inquire as
to their overall residential experience.
Each student, upon check in to the residence halls is issued and signs
for a copy of the booklet entitled
FIRE SAFETY: Rationale, Regulations and Resources for Seton Hall
University Housing Facilities
The booklet, along with the policies in the Student Handbook and the
Housing License agreement contain University policies as well as the
sanctions for failure to comply. Students are expected to read,
know, understand and follow all policies described herein.
The FIRE SAFETY booklet is also a resource about fire safety. It
is our sincerest hope and prayer that the systems we have in placeneed
never be used. Our policies reflect that desire and are based on our
cooperative learning with campus and town fire safety officials.
