The LEAD Workshops are a series of leadership development workshops to help students increase basic leadership skills, become more successful in their roles in student clubs, organizations and involvement on campus. 

  • All workshops are free of charge and open to all South Orange students.
  • All LEAD Workshops count as a COMPASS Event with Freshman Studies.  Please make sure you sign in for each workshop so your information can be sent over to your Freshman Studies’ Mentor.
  • You must register in advance for each workshop and some workshops have limited seating.

There are advertisements all over campus for this Involvement Fair, but what is it really? Come hear about what opportunities you can grab at the Involvement Fair tomorrow and how to use your time effectively. Learn how to get involved right from the start of your Seton Hall career.

  • Mark Buryk is a senior here at Seton Hall, majoring in Accounting and minoring in Fine Arts. He’s currently a brother of Alpha Phi Omega and the treasurer for the Student Government Association. He is very involved on campus and is a member of several organizations, ranging from the Slavic Club to the Setonian to MYTHOS. He believes that the key to enjoying your stay at the Hall is to get involved and meet new students.

The Pace Race - Balancing Your Social and Academic Life as a Student Leader

How often do you designate self-time during the semester? Are you involved in two or more campus organizations? Are you not involved in any campus organization? Do you feel organizational meetings are taking over your afternoon schedule? Do you find yourself only studying? Have you needed to pull three or more all-nighters this semester? Do you find yourself constantly refusing friends or always saying yes whenever asked to go out? How often do you track your progress? Do you find yourself picking and choosing which programs you will attend?

If you’ve stumbled upon any of these questions then visit the PACE RACE workshop to discover the tricks and trade to balancing academics and social life.

  • Robert Louis-CharlesRobert Louis-Charles is a New Jersey native embarking upon a multi-faceted career as a L.I.F.E advisor and aspiring author. As a L.I.F.E advisor, Robert specializes in individualized coaching and interactive workshops enhancing personal development, leadership, and critical thinking skills. Through Robert's leadership and support, clients have achieved many personal and professional goals. Success stories include but are not limited to: (1) earning positions as manager associates for BMW of North America, LLC. & The Kroger Co. (2) restructuring campus organizations and creating opportunities to receive $10,000 in programming funds, (3) inspiring new CEO's to launch businesses (4) and countless college acceptances, scholarships, and awards. These experiences strengthened his leadership as a L.I.F.E advisor presenting and receiving recognition at numerous liberal arts institutions, national leadership conferences, and non-profit organizations.

Butting Heads? Let's Talk Conflict

Do you feel as though your points aren’t being heard?  Are you getting into fights with your roommates, friends, family, clubs and organizations?  Maybe it’s time to reevaluate. This workshop will provide you with tools you will need to resolve conflicts that arise in everyday life.

  • Winston RobertsWinston Roberts is entering his fourth year at Seton Hall University. He is currently the Assistant Dean of Students.  He has earned his B.A. and M.S. degrees at the State University of New York at Albany.  Winston has worked with student programming, the Community Standards review board, the academic coaching program, and presented at student leadership conferences throughout his professional career. SHU Community Emergency Response Team

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program was developed to provide basic training in disaster survival and rescue skills.  This training permits individuals to react more effectively to an emergency and to assist themselves, their families, co-workers, neighbors, and the community until traditional emergency services personnel arrive.  CERT teams also assist the responding emergency services personnel and participate in community disaster preparedness activities. The CERT Basic Training Course provides participants with 20 hours of instruction in Disaster Preparedness, Fire Safety and Utilities Control, Disaster Medical Operations, Light Search and Rescue, CERT Organization, Terrorism and CERT, Radio Communications, and Disaster Psychology.   SHU personnel who complete the CERT Basic Training Course are encouraged to actively serve as members of the SHU CERT team.

  • Tom Giordano is currently the Assistant Director for Emergency Management at Seton Hall University.  He assumed that position in 2008 and is responsible for the coordination of the University’s emergency preparedness and response efforts.   Prior to coming to Seton Hall, Tom was employed as a Senior Planner in the Preparedness Unit of the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management for four years.  Tom served with the Rutgers University Police Department in New Brunswick, NJ for 25 years, retiring as Deputy Chief of Police.  His police service also included 18 years as a member of the Middlesex County Special Operations and Response Team. Tom is a graduate of Rutgers University and the FBI National Academy.

Brochure and Flyer Design for Marketing Your Organization

Brochures and flyers are perhaps the most versatile marketing mediums available.  They are economical to reproduce, can be distributed almost anywhere and offer plenty of room to communicate your message.  The key to getting the most from this printed advertising is in the design.  This workshop will cover how to create a smart design that will gain your audience’s attention, is easy to read and gets your message across. “Before and After” designs will be presented along with tips for using Microsoft Publisher and working with a Professional Printer.

  • Heidi TrottaHeidi Trotta is an Instructional Designer at Seton Hall University where she assists faculty with integrating instructional technologies into the classroom.  She is also involved in a number of student technology initiatives as well as teaching undergraduate and graduate courses.  Her particular academic interests include presentation design, real-world problem-based learning, digital storytelling and creating engaging e-learning modules.  She completed her Ed.M. in Instructional Technology and Media from Columbia University.

  • Chris PetruzziChris Petruzzi graduated from Seton Hall University in 2007 with a degree in Graphic Design as well as a minor in Advertising Art. He has been a part of the Teaching, Learning and Technology Center as part of the Digital Media Team since graduating in 2007. As part of the team, Chris’s work involves web and print design for the center. As well he has also taken a large role in both video production and presentation design. Chris’s creative background has helped to contribute to many exciting projects and initiatives for the TLTC at Seton Hall University.

Getting the Message Out: Marketing Your Organization Using Social Media

The purpose of this hands-on workshop is to assist you in developing a marketing plan using social media for your organization.  We will cover how to identify and leverage the best social media to share what is happening in your group, engage and interact effectively with followers and expand your audience.  Exploring the different networks, we will discuss dos and don’ts along with customizing colors, backgrounds and adding logos.  Most importantly we will provide tips on how to coordinate all the mediums together to deliver a unified message.

  • Bill OtskeyBill Otskey is the Manager of Computer Training Services and is responsible for providing software training for the entire Seton Hall community, including faculty, students and administrators. He comes from the business world where he spent 28 years in the technology realm, the last 12 years of that time conducting thousands of software training classes. He has been at Seton Hall doing software instruction for the past 12 and 1/2 years.

  • Nancy BorkowskiNancy Borkowski works in the Career Center. She has spent over 15 years in career services settings working with college and university students and faculty. Nancy received a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management and a Master of Education in College Student Personnel from Miami University (Ohio). She earned a Doctor of Education in Higher Education Administration from the University of Georgia.

Creating Your Organization's Online Presence

Learn about the many options for creating your online presence using SHU supported web technologies.  This session will delve into using WordPress, iTunes U and YouTube as well as discuss hosting and provide training for building your own sites.

  • Tom McGeeTom McGee has been the Senior Digital Media Specialist at TLTC since 2008. Before coming to SHU he worked at leading advertising agencies in New York, and worked at a major financial trade association for many years developing web sites that continue to serve millions of pages a month.

Designing an Event Poster

Poster design is more than just slapping a headline and image on a large sheet of paper.  Aesthetics, text, imagery and marketing know-how all combine to create an effective poster.  You also need to think about your audience, where your poster will be displayed and your goal.   Viewers of your poster are constantly in motion, passing by on their way to do something else so getting their attention is vital.  This workshop will cover poster design essentials to create an award-winning poster that gets results.  Options for tools will be explored along with printing tips.
