Career Exploration/Planning
Career Center

The Career Center places a high emphasis on engaging students very early in the process of career development and self-assessment. First-year students, particularly, are strongly encouraged to participate in a variety of career education programs and services.

Career decision making is a lifelong process that is revisited throughout one's life.  Choosing an academic major or selecting a potential career field can be both an exciting and overwhelming time. It involves an in-depth process of self-discovery centered on finding a fit between who you are and the world of work that interests you using the career development process. Essential to self-discovery is discerning one’s calling in life; reflecting one’s goals, dreams, passions, and gifts.

Seton Hall University’s Career Center offers a variety of resources to assist you in the career exploration process and gathering occupational information.

  • Every November is Career Development Month. During this time, the entire month is dedicated to learning about various careers and the professional paths of alumni through an assortment of career education programs/seminars that highlight the journeys many professionals have taken to discover their calling.  These programs are essential for first-year students or any student interested in defining or furthering their personal career plan.

  • Students interested in learning more about careers and industries have the advantage to connect with Pirate Mentors, Seton Hall alumni who have generously volunteered their time and expertise to provide career advice, information on internships, and sometimes an opportunity to shadow them for a day.  To connect with a Pirate Mentor, you will need a Navigator account. If you don't have a Navigator account, call our office at (973) 761-9355 to meet with a career professional.

  • Up to date information regarding events, resources, and other career-related announcements are available to all students via Blogs.

  • Students are also encouraged to reliably research occupations via online resources, including O*NET (online occupational information), Occupational Outlook Handbook, and VAULT (online career research tool). These resources provide important information including salary, descriptions of occupations and companies, education requirements, and related occupations.

  • The Career Center also offers a variety of career assessments to assist undergraduate and graduate students (free of charge), or alumni of Seton Hall University with self-awareness and self-exploration.

    • FOCUS-2® is a self-paced career guidance tool that assists students in making decisions related to major and/or career choices through self-assessment and occupational exploration. This assessment includes important career perspectives including assessment of one’s interests, skills, leisure activities, values, and personality.

    • The Strong Interest Inventory ® (SII®) and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) are also available to further appraise your interests and personality preferences. These assessments assist in increasing self-awareness in addition to providing match majors, activities, and career fields.
