The School of Diplomacy and International Relations is pleased to announce that its Semester in Washington, D.C., program is now open to all Seton Hall University students.
With the recent addition of two new course offerings beginning fall 2014, students of all majors are able to pursue competitive Washington, D.C., based internships while maintaining their University financial assistance packages and full-time student status at Seton Hall.
Interested current students are encouraged to attend a Semester in
Washington, D.C. information session on Friday, March 20, from 1-2 p.m. in the Diplomacy Room, McQuaid Hall. RSVP to Carolin.firstname.lastname@example.org. "Washington, D.C.," comments Dr. Andrea Bartoli, Dean of the School of Diplomacy and International Relations, "is where political, social, and economic interactions are maximized. For dynamic students, the exposure to colleagues working in this challenging environment can have lifelong implications."
This year's courses include The Washington Experience Study Tour: Actors, Institutions and the Policy Process, which introduces students to prominent Washington-based professionals and institutions that influence international policy. A second course, Washington Seminar on Global Policy Challenges, examines the causes, consequences and possible solutions to many of the global policy challenges of the 21st century.
Seton Hall Washington, D.C. courses, sponsored by the School of Diplomacy, are open to enrolled undergraduate and graduate students who will be interning in the nation’s capital. Class sessions will be taught by former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and School of Diplomacy visiting Sharkey Scholar Catharin Dalpino, and held at the United Nations
Foundation, located just one block from The White House. Undergraduate students wishing to maintain full-time enrollment status may pursue this program plus take an independent study course. Graduate students maintain full-time enrollment status by pursuing the program. Fall and spring semester participants can utilize Washington Intern Student
Housing (WISH) to explore housing options. Summer semester student interns have the additional option of securing available housing on local D.C. college campuses.
Dr. Ruby will assist students with the internship search and application processes, as well as connect them with alumni in the D.C. metro area who are working in fields related to students’ interests.
Past Washington, D.C. internship hosts have included institutions such as the Central Intelligence Agency, State Department, U.S. Supreme Court, and the Department of Homeland Security. Students have also interned in local embassies, think tanks, and the offices of U.S. Senators and Congressmen.
"For many students," adds Dean Bartoli, "the Washington experience is paramount. It is there that many Diplomacy and Seton Hall alumni have found their career paths."
Recent Seton Hall graduate Ryan Maddox, who majored in diplomacy and
international relations, spent last spring in Washington, D.C., interning with the International Council of Beverages Associations (ICBA), the main international trade association for the beverage industry. Maddox's internship afforded him the opportunity to experience
the domestic and international aspects of private sector economics, law, and multi-national corporations.
“Experiencing first-hand the inner-workings of this global organization and immersing myself in the life of a D.C. student and employee really shaped my future plans. I’m looking forward to kicking off my career in the private sector and applying what I learned at the ICBA,” said Maddox.
Since the fall of 2012, the School of Diplomacy has offered students the opportunity to experience first-hand the inner-workings of our nation’s capital as well as the United Nations community and the world of international business. An affiliate member of the Association of
Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA), the School is the only member school to have this kind of presence in both New York City and Washington. D.C.
