Great Spiritual Books Spotlights Graham Greene

Graham Greene

Graham Greene

New insights on grace and the soul will be brought to light on Saturday, February 28, 2009.

On that day, from 1:30 - 4:30 p.m., the Institute for Christian Spirituality will hold its next Great Spiritual Book of the Semester Club meeting, which will focus on two works by famed author Graham Greene: The Power and the Glory and The Heart of the Matter. The first is the story of a Roman Catholic priest in the deeply troubled Tabasco region of Mexico in the 1930s, a time when tensions between the church and government were high. The other tells the tale of moral change and a prideful individual's relationship with the Catholic church in Sierra Leone. Both books were selected by Time Magazine as part of its 100 Best English-Language Novels from 1923 -- 2005.

In addition to Graham's masterworks, participants will also engage in discussion about grace and the soul in the Letters of St. Paul. The discussions will be led by:

  • Reverend Ian Boyd, president of the G.K. Chesterton Institute for Faith & Culture
  • Dermot Quinn, professor in the department of history and a member of the Board of Advisers of the G.K. Chesterton Institute for Faith & Culture
  • Gregory Glazov, associate professor of biblical studies and coordinator of the Great Spiritual Books program

The event is $15 and will take place in Lewis Hall. For more information, or to R.S.V.P., please contact Debbie Kurus at (973) 313-6329 or kurusdeb@shu.edu
