Each Christmas season, the Division of Volunteer Efforts (DOVE) hosts an annual toy drive that provides gifts to the North Star Academy in Newark, the Maplewood South Orange School District, and the Don Bosco Youth Center. In addition to local sites, DOVE donates gifts for the impoverished children in Appalachia, West Virginia, which they have done for over 25 years. The gifts will be delivered by DOVE staff and volunteers. Many of those children may not have received a Christmas gift if not for DOVE's donations.
Seton Hall students, employees, and alumni get involved by taking a "toy tag" from DOVE. Each toy tag includes a child's name and his or her Christmas wish list. Amanda Cavanagh, the assistant director of DOVE, recalls one child's wish list: "One of the boys from Newark asked for an X-box gift card and flowers for his mom!"
Students who take a toy tag Christmas shop for the child based on what is written on the tag and bring their donations back to the DOVE office. This year, unwrapped gifts should be brought to DOVE by December 10.
As it gets closer to Christmas, the office begins to flood with donated gifts. Join us at the toy wrapping party on December 12 to help sort, wrap, and deliver the gifts. The drive is always a huge success and a phenomenal way to start the Christmas season.
The DOVE toy drive is just one of many ways you can give back to the community and fulfill the University's mission of servant leadership through the 12 Acts of Christmas Kindness initiative. The campaign encourages those in the Seton Hall community to perform 12 acts of kindness throughout the holiday season.
