This year, the Paul A. Stellhorn New Jersey History Award, for an outstanding undergraduate course paper written on any aspect of New Jersey history, was given to Seton Hall University student John Rocco Calabro for his paper “An Economic History of the City of Paterson.”
The award is named for Paul A. Stellhorn (1947-2001), a distinguished historian and public servant who worked at the Newark Public Library.
Calabro, a senior history major, wrote the paper for a course taught by Professor Williamjames Hoffer. The award was presented on March 28, 2008 during the New Jersey History Issues Convention in Trenton, New Jersey.
Four undergraduates at New Jersey institutions received honorable mention for their papers. Included were two other history majors from Seton Hall. Colleen Gaedcke, a 2007 graduate, wrote “A Crisis Is At Hand: The Rise and Fall of the North American Phalanx, 1843-1856” for History Honors, working with Professor Brigitte Koenig, and Richard Tracy, a sophomore, wrote “Camden: A City Facing the Post-Industrial Age,” in a course taught by Professor Hoffer.
