Seton Hall > News & Events

The Department of History welcomes Dr. Frank de la Teja, M.A. ’81, back to campus on Monday, April 28, 2008 when he will present a lecture on “Why Urbano and María Trinidad Can't Get Married: Social Relations in Late Colonial Texas.” The focus of his lecture is on the opposition of the marriage of a young girl to a mission Indian, which draws out issues of race, status, gender, honor, and social control. At that time the area was part of New Spain, the vast region colonized by the Spanish empire.

Dr. de la Teja, received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in 1979 and a Master of Art degree in History in 1981 from Seton Hall University before earning a Ph.D. in History from the University of Texas at Austin. He will speak at 4 p.m. on April 28 in Jubilee Hall 139.

The Department of History invites the University community, and especially all those interested in Latin American studies, to attend this event. If you plan to come please e-mail historydept@shu.edu to register.

Partial funding for this event has been provided by the College of Arts and Sciences thanks to the generous support of one of its President's Advisory Council members.
