Vincent of Lérins, a 5th-century theologian, is one of the earliest thinkers to face the thorny issue of how Christian doctrine develops over time. His work has helped the Church think clearly about the essential blending of continuity and change over the course of the centuries. Vincent invites us to look at questions at the very heart of the theological enterprise:

  • Can the Church truly "progress" in its teachings over time?
  • Why does the Church call some changes "developments," but other changes "heresies"?
  • Who decides that one change is illegitimate while another is perfectly acceptable?
  • How can Vincent’s thought help the Church today?
