Chinese Language Teachers Assocation Conference - 2013Four decades ago, Seton Hall University started to offer Chinese language courses. The University also conducted a series of public lectures and forums on the Chinese culture and history regularly throughout the semester. Among the list of special lecturers was the well-known figure, Dr. Hu Shih, former Chinese Ambassador to United States, President of National University of Peiping. Soon after Seton Hall University became a major center for preparing Chinese-language teachers.

As one of the pioneers and leaders in the field of teaching Chinese in the US, Seton Hall University hosted, on May 4-5, the 2013 Annual Conference of Chinese Language Teachers Association of Greater New York\The 11th New York International Conference on Teaching Chinese Language and Culture. Dr. Dongdong Chen, Associate Professor, Director of Chinese Program, and Director of Graduate Program in Asian Studies from Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures served as co-chair of the conference.  

Dr. Joan Guetti, Senior Associate Provost, delivered welcome remarks on behalf of the Office of the Provost. Representing the Dean’s Office of College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Charles Carter, Associate Dean of College of Arts and Sciences, Professor of Religion, welcomed the conference participants. As part of his welcome remarks, a special singing of credit transfer agreement between Minzu University of China and Seton Hall University was held on the stage, with all the conference participants watching as witnesses.  

Over 250 scholars, teachers, and administrators participated in the conference. In addition to two keynote speeches, 112 speakers presented at 29 panels, discussing various issues in the field of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, and exchanging research results, teaching experience, and views on Chinese language instruction. While the majority of participants are from America, scholars from universities and schools in Asia, Australia, Europe came to the conference, including a number of deans from Chinese universities.
