Dear Members of the University Community:
I would like to share the following exciting news announced earlier today by the Big East Conference:
“The Presidents of the Big East Conference this morning formally approved an agreement that will allow the seven basketball schools - DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John’s and Villanova – to establish a new conference that will begin play in the 2013-14 academic year under the "Big East" name.
The seven basketball schools, which include many of the original founding schools of the Big East, have unanimously established the goal of continuing the storied legacy and time-honored traditions of athletic competition so closely associated with the Big East, including being the home of the very best college basketball in the nation.
Details about the expected broadcast media deal, season-ending tournament and additional members of the new conference will be announced in the near future.”
The new conference will best position Seton Hall University and our student-athletes to succeed and to grow both academically and athletically. Seton Hall played a role in the founding of the Big East more than 30 years ago, and we feel that this move will help to transform us and our peer institutions into a powerhouse basketball conference for the next 30 years and beyond.
Director of Athletics Pat Lyons also shares my enthusiasm, saying, “This is undoubtedly a very exciting time for Seton Hall Athletics. As a charter member of the Big East Conference, it is gratifying to know we will continue to compete under a moniker that represents such storied history and tradition. While we remember and honor the great rivalries of the past, we're looking forward to writing a new chapter of future BIG EAST competition.”
As additional details emerge regarding the Big East Conference, I will keep you apprised.
A. Gabriel Esteban
