Jose PrietoThe event will take place on April 11, 2013, at 6:30 pm, in Fahy Hall 236, on Seton Hall University campus. Presentation to be followed by Q&A and book signing. Slavic refreshments served. Free and open to the public.

Seton Hall University professor José Manuel Prieto is an internationally acclaimed novelist and essayist, whose new novel "Encyclopedia of a Life in Russia" was published earlier this year by Grove Atlantic. In this book, José Manuel Prieto has beautifully crafted a kaleidoscopic portrait of modern life in Russia through alphabetical encyclopedic entries. Poetic, humorous, truth-seeking, and fanciful, Prieto melds literature, philosophy, and pop culture into a story of two misfits caught between old traditions and modern consumerism. This is a novel that defies chronology and conformity, and finds the sublime in the trivial, ranging from meditations on Bach and Dostoyevsky to Italian alligator shoes and toothpaste.

“A terrifyingly original writer, José Manuel Prieto’s prose shakes the walls of the literary kingdom” — Gary Shteyngart

"Encyclopedia of a Life in Russia by Cuba’s José Manuel Prieto is easily one of the most challenging and beautiful books I’ve read in years" - Brian Howton

This event is co-sponsored by the Russian and East European Studies Program and the Slavic Club.
