Alina Ivette Fernandez

Rising Junior, Alina Ivette Fernandez of Scranton, PA is one of just 6% of Latino leaders from across the country who successfully applied for a 2012 Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) Scholarship. CHCI provides three-pronged development and networking programs for selected undergraduate students consisting of work experience, a community service project, and educational and professional programming by CHCI.

For Fernandez, receiving this scholarship means traveling to Washington, D.C. for the summer to intern in NY Senator Charles Schumer’s office. “I will use the opportunity,” says Fernandez, “to gain first-hand experience of our nation's legislative system and to build connections with other students from around the country who share my interests.”

Fernandez’ strong resume of involvement in community service and clubs and organizations showcases her ability to speak, write and think on her feet, a skill that will serve her well as she attends sessions and meets with distinguished leaders to engage in substantive policy discussions.

As she prepares to begin her summer on the Hill, Fernandez is excited to hit the ground running, but just as enthusiastic about sharing her experiences with her Whitehead School community upon returning to campus. “The faculty and staff of the Whitehead School are always there for me,” she notes. “I can stop by without an appointment, and I will always be greeted by a warm and familiar face. I am not just a number; they know me and genuinely want me to succeed in my chosen endeavors.”

Little does she realize, we are already celebrating her success.
