Education Leadership Graduate Pirates in Print
Several recent Executive Ed.D. and Traditional Ed.D. doctoral graduates from the Department of Education Leadership, Management and Policy
published articles in peer-reviewed journals and delivered research presentations at national conferences.
Erin O’Connell, Ed.D., a recent graduate from Executive Doctoral Cohort XIV had her article, "The Federal Government’s Impact on United States’ Public Schools: The Unnecessary Standardization of the American Student," accepted by the University of Bergamo, Italy for inclusion in a special issue on: "Becoming Citizens: The Role and Analysis of Relevant Legislation for the Education of the Person." A secondary article based on the topic was also published in the spring issue of the peer-reviewed Italian education journal CQIA Rivista: Formazione, Lavoro, Persona, available at http://www.cqiarivista.eu. Dr. O’Connell published her first article, "Repeating History: Lessons from Education’s Past to Guide the Future," in the 2011 volume of the peer-reviewed New Jersey Journal of Supervision and Curriculum Development.
Peter Turnamian, Ed.D., another graduate of the Executive Doctoral Cohort XIV Program, published "What I've Learned about Charter Schools after Ten Years on the Front Lines." His article was published in the Kappa Delta Pi Record, a nationally circulated, peer-reviewed journal of education policy and practice. Dr. Turnamian’s article raised important questions about the claims made by some of the movement’s supporters of the superior quality of education in the charter arena.
Michael Gilbert, Ed.D., was the third graduate from the Executive Doctoral Cohort XIV program to publish. His article, "Creating a Healthy Learning Environment" was published in the 2011 volume of the peer-reviewed New Jersey Journal of Supervision and Curriculum Development. Dr. Gilbert’s article presented ways school administrators can create positive learning environments in their schools.
Maria Pereira, Ed.D., a graduate from the Executive Doctoral Cohort XIII program presented her research, "The Influence of Interim Assessments on Grade 8 Student Achievement on State Mandated Tests of Mathematics and Language Arts" at the annual conference of the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration in Portland, OR in August 2011. Dr. Pereira's findings suggest that some computer-based pretest-posttest products do little to improve student achievement.
Christopher Huss, Ed.D., a graduate of the Executive Doctoral Cohort XI Program published "Restructuring Primary Grade Classes and Maximizing Student Achievement" in the 2011 volume of the peer-reviewed NJASCD Journal of Supervision and Curriculum Development. Dr. Huss examined the influence of small class size on student achievement in the primary grades.
Darrell Carson, Ed.D., a 2011 graduate of the Traditional Ed.D. program presented his research at the American Education Research Association Conference held in Vancouver, Canada in April, 2012. He will conduct another presentation at the National Council of Professors of Education Administration conference to be held in Kansas City, MO, in August 2012. His presentations are based on his dissertation research: "The Perceptions of Co-teachers about Their Roles and Responsibilities in Middle School Classrooms." Dr. Carson is also currently writing several article based on the outcomes from his research.
