PA Faculty Receives National Writing Award
Ellen D. Mandel, DMH, MPA, PA-C, associate professor in the School of Health and Medical Sciences' (SHMS) Physician Assistant Program, was honored with third-place in the national PAragon Writing Award competition. Candidates must have published a continuing medical education level article in a peer-reviewed journal for consideration.
Mandel's winning article, "Erythema Infectionsum: The Many Faces of Fifth Disease," was published in the Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants in June 2009. Mandel reflects that the article was prompted by her encounter with an adult patient who had this usually benign childhood illness. Adults often have a more severe illness which may be easily misdiagnosed or even missed. Her patient suggested that she publish about this phenomenon and the rest is history. Mandel is a Seton Hall University (SHU) alum with an MPA ('85) and enjoys blending her experiences in academia with clinical work at the Summit Medical Group. She continues to publish and mentors her students to do likewise.
