Toxic Legacy of 9/11

Dust by Dr. LioyTens of thousands claim they were sickened by the dust that followed the destruction of the World Trade Center on 9/11. Ten thousands of them have sued the city of New York and just reached a tentative settlement of over $650 million. Nobody has studied the dust more extensively than Dr. Paul J. Lioy of the Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences Institute of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ).

Dr. Lioy has written about his scientific investigations, and the impact the dust has had on the New York region, in a new book called "Dust: The Inside Story of its role in the September 11th Aftermath." Dr. Lioy will give a preview of the book and will speak about the dust from a scientific perspective and an intensely personal point of view. His presentation will be held on March 23 at 4pm in the Beck Rooms, Walsh Library, followed by a reception and book signing.

The event, open to all, is sponsored by the Department of Communication, Department of Biological Sciences, the Biology Society and the Environmental Studies program. Partial funding has been provided by the College of Arts and Sciences thanks to the generous support of the President and the Advisory Council members.
