Lecture on New Jersey and the American Revolution Seton Hall > News & Events Monday, February 1, 2010 by: Maxine N. Lurie, Ph.D. The Department of History will be hosting a lecture about the American Revolution and New Jersey with award winning author and historian, John Fea, Ph.D. on, Monday March 15 at 2:30 p.m. in Fahy Hall Room 236.
Professor Fea, an Associate Professor of American History at Messiah College, will present a lecture on his award winning book The Way to Improvement Leads Home: Philip Vickers Fithian and the Rural Enlightenment in Early America. In it he looks at Fithian, a young man from South Jersey, and how he was impacted by the Enlightenment and Great Awakening, and then participated in the start of the American Revolution. Fithian is best known for his diaries recording life in colonial Virginia, where he served as a tutor after graduating from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University). Fea examines his transition from farmer to minister and then to chaplain in the Army. In the process he notes the community and intellectual ties of those with whom Fithian grew up.
The lecture is open to the Seton Hall University community. Please R.S.V.P. by March 12 to Dr. Maxine Lurie at maxine.lurie@shu.edu or (973) 275-2772.
Partial funding for this event has been provided by the College of Arts and Sciences thanks to the generous support of the President's Advisory Council members.
*This event was originally scheduled for February 10th, but had to be postponed due to weather conditions. For more information please contact: Maxine N. Lurie, Ph.D. (973) 275-2772 Maxine.lurie@shu.edu
