History flierMusic History Study in Italy is a 3-credit undergraduate music history course, with no pre-requisite, that will provide a musical immersion experience of study and live concerts on a daily basis against the backdrop of the medieval city of Assisi in the Umbrian region of Italy.

Assisi, known for its History, Art, and Spirituality, is the birthplace of St. Francis and St. Clare, and was the work place of the famous 17th century composer and choir master Giacomo Carissimi. With the presence of the two-week Assisi Performing Arts Music Festival during the month of July, Assisi provides an authentic cultural and musical environment for “Exploring the Italian Roots of Western Art Music.”

This unique course combines topical readings, lecture, and discussion with daily attendance at live concert performances provided by the resident Assisi Performing Arts Music Festival. Through listening to live performances of opera, sacred choral music, vocal and instrumental music, musical theater, and jazz, the student will experience a cultural and musical immersion that will support musical understanding, deepen musical appreciation, expand cultural awareness, and forge intercultural relationship.

In addition to the course curriculum of study, students also will have the opportunity to attend open music rehearsals, workshops, and classes conducted by the artists of the Assisi Performing Arts Music Festival. For Music Festival information, you can visit www.assisiperformingarts.org.

The trip also will include opportunities for guided tours of historic and cultural sites in Assisi, Siena, and Rome, including the Vatican, the Coliseum, Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, and more.

Students will spend July 1- July 14 in Assisi, and July 15-16 in Rome. The program will accept 12 students.  The cost of the travel package is $3,680.00.  This price includes all air fare and land transportation, the travel management fee, hotel accommodations (double occupancy), breakfasts and dinners at the hotel, and all tours and Festival activities.

Tuition costs, with a possible tuition discount, are separate from and not included in the travel package costs.  There is a non-refundable deposit of $100.00 due by February 1, and a subsequent deposit of $1,500.00 is due on March 1.
