Guests gathered at The New York Public Library on December 3rd to honor Ambassador Frank C. Carlucci, as the School's 2009 Global Citizen. Ambassador Carlucci was honored for his leadership and dedication to public service. Among his many accomplishments, Ambassador Carlucci was secretary of defense and assistant for national security affairs during the Reagan administration. Read more »
 
Guests watched video messages from Henry Kissinger as well as former President of Portugal Mario Soares and listened as the School's namesake John C. Whitehead praised their admired colleague and friend.

Diplomacy Gala 2009

Ambassador Carlucci was introduced by The Honorable Stephen Hadley, national security advisor to President George W. Bush. He told guests that Ambassador Carlucci's example provides much guidance for national security advisors including treating people with respect, acting as an honest broker, seeking better ways to advance American interests, and committing to a strong America.
 
David Brancaccio, host and senior editor of PBS's award-winning news magazine, NOW, acted as the evening's master of ceremonies. Also in attendance were members of the diplomatic corps, members of the Luso-American community, Seton Hall's Board of Regents, the Whitehead School's Board of Overseers, distinguished alumni, students, faculty, and supporters of the Whitehead School.
 
Admirers and friends of Ambassador Carlucci lent their support to his award including former First Lady Nancy Reagan, The Honorable George Shultz, The Honorable Colin Powell, The Honorable Elizabeth Dole, Lieutenant General Brent Scowcroft, His Excellency João de Vallera of Portugal, The Honorable Max Kampelman, and The Honorable William S. Sessions.

Moved by the compliments of his friends and colleagues, Ambassador Carlucci accepted the 2009 Global Citizen award. In his speech, he highlighted to students the importance of eliminating nuclear weapons from the Earth.

About the Global Leadership Gala
Diplomacy Leadership GalaThe Whitehead School's Global Leadership Gala honors individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in international careers. From global health to economic development, education and environmental sustainability, this distinguished group of global citizens addresses high-priority issues in a range of fields.

This black tie event draws a crowd of over 250 guests for a night of fine dining and dancing to raise funds that allow the Whitehead School to offer programming opportunities including the World Leaders Forum. The School's largest single fundraiser, the Gala has raised over $4 million for the Whitehead School. The Global Leadership Gala has been held at some of the most prestigious venues in New York and New Jersey including the Waldorf Astoria, the Winter Garden at the World Financial Center, Cipriani Wall Street and the Short Hills Hilton. Guests have included famed diplomats and politicians such as Hillary Clinton and Henry Kissinger.
 
Past honorees include Andrew N. Liveris, chairman and chief executive officer, The Dow Chemical Company; His Eminence Theodore Cardinal McCarrick, Archbishop Emeritus of Washington; and John C. Whitehead, former deputy secretary of state and co-chairman of Goldman Sachs, among others.
