Junior biochemistry major, Charles Defendorf, has been selected as an awardee of the 2009-2010 Novartis Science Scholarship. The award is administered annually by the Independent College Fund of New Jersey (ICFNJ). Charles satisfied the following award criteria: be enrolled at an ICFNJ member college or university; be entering their junior or senior year; be majoring in a science field; possess a minimum grade point average of 3.5 or better; and have conducted independent scientific research.
Since his freshman year, Charles has been conducting research in the field of organic chemistry in the laboratory of John Sowa, Ph.D., associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry. In the summer following his sophomore year, he was a recipient of a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) grant through the Teaching Learning and Technology Center (TLTC) where he successfully integrated information technology and his organic chemistry research project. He has presented his work at the Petersheim Academic Exposition and his poster won first place in the chemistry section at the Third Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium at William Paterson University.
Charles is interested in pursuing a career in medical research and medicine.
