On Tuesday, September 29, 2009, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Political Science will host a panel discussion with two former governors of New Jersey, The Honorable Brendan Byrne and The Honorable Thomas H. Kean as they share their thoughts on the 2009 New Jersey Gubernatorial Election.  This event is being moderated by Steve Adubato, Ph.D.  The event will be held in Jubilee Hall Auditorium at 4-6 p.m.  This event is open to the all students and the Seton Hall University community.   The event is co-sponsored by the Student Government Association, the College Democrats, and the College Republicans. 

Thomas H. Kean is former governor of New Jersey (1982-1990) and from 1990 until 2005, the president of Drew University. In 2002 he was appointed Chairman of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, widely known as the 9/11 Commission.  Kean also served for ten years in the New Jersey Assembly, rising to the positions of majority leader, minority leader, and speaker. As governor, he served on the President's Education Policy Advisory Committee and as chair of the Education Commission of the States and the National Governor's Association Task Force on Teaching. He holds a B.A. from Princeton University and an M.A. from Columbia University Teachers College, as well as more than 25 honorary degrees and numerous awards from environmental and educational organizations.

Brendan Thomas Byrne served as the 47th Governor of New Jersey, from 1974 to 1982. He has also served as an Essex County Prosecutor, President of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and New Jersey Superior Court Judge, and Trustee of Princeton University, among other posts. The Brendan T. Byrne State Forest (formerly Lebanon State Forest) is named for him. The Brendan T. Byrne Arena in the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford was also named for him, although it was renamed the Continental Airlines Arena in 1996, and then the IZOD Center in 2007. He is currently a partner at Carella, Byrne, Bain, Gilfillan, Cecchi, Stewart Olstein in Roseland.  Byrne initially enrolled in Seton Hall University, but then left to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II.  After the war, he returned to school and graduated from Princeton University, A.B., 1949, and Harvard University, LL.B, 1950.

Governor Byrne and Governor Kean co-write a weekly column in The Star-Ledger, containing their "dialogue" on state and national public affairs and politics.
Steve Adubato, Ph.D., has enjoyed a distinguished career as a broadcaster, author and motivational speaker. A university lecturer, Emmy Award-winning television anchor, and Star-Ledger columnist, Steve also served in the mid 1980s as New Jersey's youngest state legislator at age 26.  He currently anchors two Channel Thirteen/WNET (PBS) broadcasts  -- Caucus: New Jersey, an Emmy Award-winning public affairs television series, also broadcast on NJN-Public Television; and Inside Trenton, a news program covering New Jersey political issues on a weekly basis.  He is currently co-teaching a course on New Jersey politics with Joseph R. Marbach, Ph.D., dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
