Acclaimed Oudist Simon Shaheen and his Ensemble at Seton Hall Seton Hall > News & Events Monday, September 14, 2009 by: Philip Kayal The Arab Caravan Radio Show is hosting a fundraising event on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 8 p.m. in Jubilee Hall Auditorium. This event will feature international acclaimed Simon Shaheen and his Ensemble with proceeds going towards Seton Hall University’s student-run radio station, WSOU 89.5 FM.
Simon Shaheen, a virtuoso of the oud and violin, is one of the most highly regarded Arab musician, performer, and composer of his generation. Born into a Palestinian family from the village of Tarshiha in Galilee, Shaheen was steeped in music in early childhood. He learned to play the oud, (a pear shaped ten stringed “violin” considered the precursor of the lute) at the age of five with his father Hikmat Shaheen, a famous teacher and composer of Arabic music, and a year later began his studies on the violin at the Conservatory for Western Classical Music in Haifa.
In 1980, he moved to New York City, where he completed his graduate studies in performance at the Manhattan School of Music, and musicology and music education at Colombia University. Shaheen tours internationally (over 120 countries) with his Ensemble, as a solo artist, and as a lecturer throughout the academic world promoting awareness of Arabic music. He has performed in many of the most prestigious concert halls in the world and regularly gives workshops and lectures at such leading institutions as Juilliard, Colombia, Cornell, Princeton, Harvard, and Yale.
As a composer, he has written traditional and innovative music and scores for theatre and films, including The Sheltering Sky, and Malcolm X. He has released seven recordings, including The Music of Mohamed Abdel Wahab (Axiom) and the Grammy-nominated Blue Flame (ARK21). He established and runs the Arab Festival of Arts, Mahrajan al-Fan, in New York and the Annual Arabic Music Retreat at Mount Holyoke College. In 1994, he received the Prestigious National Heritage Fellowship, this nation’s highest honor in the traditional arts.
Reservations for this concert can be made by calling Arab Caravan co-host John Obeji at (973) 778-5099. Tickets are $25/$15 for students (made payable to WSOU-Seton Hall University) and proceeds benefit WSOU.
