Seton Hall's Associate Professor of Public and Healthcare Administration, Anne M. Hewitt, Ph.D. gave parents and students some back-to-school tips on H1N1 on two radio programs on August 31, 2009. The first was Gary Pozsik's "Health, Wealth and Happiness" broadcast on WGCV in Columbia, South Carolina. Later that day, she was a guest speaker for the nationally syndicated "For the People" Radio Show with Chuck Harder, a part of TalkStar Radio Network.
Dr. Hewitt's radio segment was titled "Back to School: Is it the ABC's or the CDC?" and focused on the preparation for communities, schools and hospitals and the second wave of the H1N1 flu.
As the majority of American children head back to school in the coming weeks, their school administrators will already have completed their most important homework assignment for the entire year - planning for the H1N1 flu. During the first week in August, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released their guidance for schools to plan for any H1N1 flu outbreak. And as any parent already knows, the flu didn't disappear this summer.
Here are some tips for parents:
Check your school Web site for H1N1 flu updates
Make sure your child understands the basic precautions such as how and when to wash their hands, how to cough/sneeze and what to do if they feel ill at school
Prepare for a possible “stay at home” time now
And make sure your child understands the meaning of “social distancing” which DOES NOT INCLUDE going to the mall
Dr. Hewitt is the director of the Seton Center for Community Health (SCCH). She established it in 2004 as an academic resource for collaboration, learning and research to enhance the quality of life for individuals and improve the health status of New Jersey residents. The SCCH provides technical assistance and scholarship to local community health agencies using a partnership approach and is located in the College of Arts arts Sciences in the Department of Public and Healthcare Administration.
