Amy M. Smith ’09, a senior majoring in criminal justice, delivered her paper, "Hannibal Lecter & Violentization: Where Do Truth and Fiction Meet?" at the 5th Annual International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry. The meeting was held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on May 20-23, 2009. More than 1,300 people from all over the world attended this conference.
Smith, who is from Northern Virginia, delivered her paper at a session on “Violence, Social Interaction, and Socialization” organized by her professor Lonnie Athens, D.Crim. Athens, who teaches in Seton Hall University’s Department of Criminal Justice, said "Amy displayed great composure in delivering her paper, which was well-received by the audience." He added that her stellar performance at the Congress opened the door for other undergraduates with a flair for writing and public speaking to deliver papers at the Congress in the future.
Smith became interested in qualitative methods last fall while a student in Dr. Athens’ Qualitative Methods of Criminal Justice Research course. After graduating this December, she hopes to become a criminal analyst for the federal government. For more information please contact: Miriam Lyons-Frolow, M.P.A;. 973-761-9698 lyonfmi@shu.edu
