A New Record on Federal Funding at Seton Hall University

The National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institutes of Health has awarded Dr. Sulie L. Chang, professor and director of the Institute of NeuroImmune Pharmacology (I-NIP), with three grant awards this year.

The first is Chang’s K02 Research Scientist Development Award-Year 7. Chang completed her first five years of K02 award (2003-2008) with a total budget of $561,685.00. A total of $600,980.00 has been approved for funding over a second five-year period, Years 6-10 (2008-2013).The award amount for Year 7 in 2009, announced on February 1, 2009, is $120,196.This award includes the opportunity for Chang to mentor the young scientists, at the levels of high school to junior faculty member, who are affiliated with the I-NIP.

The second is Chang’s second R01 award-Year 19. This R01 project’s title is "Morphine Actions on the Immune System.” Chang completed her first five years of this R01 from 1992 to 1997 (total budget: $414,021.00), her second five years from 1997-2002 (total budget: 655,909.00) and her third five years from 2002 to 2007 (total budget: $1,066,310.00). Chang successfully renewed this R01 award in 2007 for the forth set of five years from 2007 to 2012 (total budget: $1,478,653.00).The award for Year 19 in 2009, also announced on February 1, 2009, is $266,076.

The third is Chang’s third R01 Grant Award ($479,189) that was newly awarded on March 19 as Year 1 in 2009. Its title is "Mechanisms of Nicotine's Behavioral Effects on the HIV-1 Transgenic Rat." This is a multiple principal investigator (PI) award with Chang as the Contact Principal Investigator (PI). Chang’s partner PI is Dr. Ming D. Li of the University of Virginia. A total of $2,475,122 has been recommended for funding over a five-year period (2009-2014). Chang’s two R01 grant awards support the work of the scientists affiliated with the I-NIP.
