The Whitehead School strengthened its trans-Atlantic ties on Wednesday by officially launching a partnership with Portugal's diplomatic institute. At a late afternoon ceremony in the atrium of the new Science and Technology Building, Dean Menzies, together with His Excellency Carlos Neves Ferreira, President of the Insituto Diplomático of Portugal (IDI), and Portuguese Ambassador João de Vallera, signed a Protocol of Cooperation, confirming the commitment of the IDI and the Whitehead School to develop collaborative programs. The protocol identifies the Whitehead School as a partner in the study and practice of diplomacy and foreign relations. It allows the two organizations to explore and develop common interests in the investigation and analysis of shared foreign policy concerns, through research, conferences, courses, and internships to advance the trans-Atlantic relationship and agenda. This relationship between the Whitehead School and the IDI was forged by Francisco Azevedo, Portuguese Consulate in Newark, and Rosa Alves, former Associate Dean of Administration for the Whitehead School. It will provide opportunities for our faculty and students as well as access to Portuguese speaking nations and much more. “This is a unique opportunity, the first of its kind for the university, to partner with a government institution of an allied nation. This relationship will be of great benefit and significance to the School and the University,” said Ambassador John Menzies, Dean of the Whitehead School. The relationship and signing were celebrated by both the University community and the Portuguese American community. Guests included many government and university officials.
