Breaking Down the Barriers to Better Health for Latinos
Seton Hall > News & Events

The Joseph A. Unanue Latino Institute presents the new NJN documentary, Su Salud Primero  - Your Health First, on Thursday, April 23, 6 - 7:30 p.m. in the Helen Lerner Amphitheater in the Science and Technology Center.

This new production, hosted and narrated by ABC Network's Primetime co-anchor John Quiñones, explores the healthcare crisis affecting the Hispanic population.  The impacting, half hour documentary presents the candid, personal stories of survivors.  The film illustrates the value of preventive care and need for lifestyle changes to overcome the restrictions of the most troubling illnesses afflicting the Latino community including: asthma; heart disease; obesity and cancer.  In an honest and culturally sensitive presentation the documentary stresses the importance of open lines of communication between the medical community and the Hispanic individuals served.  Also presented are some of the innovative programs developed to break the economic, social and traditional barriers that have kept many Latinos from good health.

Emmy award winner, director, and producer William Sanchez, will be present for a panel discussion following the screening of the film.  Also participating in the discussion will be Dr. Phyllis Hansell, Dean of the College of Nursing, Dr. Doreen Stiskal, Chair, Department of Physical Therapy, School of Health and Medical Sciences, Rubén Fernández '75, Vice President of Patient Medical Care Services at Palisades Medical Center.

Survivors appearing in the film and Seton Hall graduates, who now serve the Latino community in the various medical areas, will also participate in the discussion.  Community organizations and medical service providers have also been invited to join the conversation.
