Students Going Abroad to Italy
Seton Hall > News & Events

Hello Italy Study Abroad students:

I have heard that many of you are stressed about the required visa for Italy. Please don't panic  - you will have to move quickly but there is plenty of time.  Please read EVERYTHING below and follow the instructions.

  •  ALL SETON HALL students should use the NEW YORK CITY Italian Consulate. Since you are all full-time students in Essex County you can use the New York City consulate. The NYC location is quicker than any other location.

  • The Italian Student Visa is FREE

  • You must apply IN PERSON to the New York City Consulate office. They accept visa applications Monday to Thursday 9 a.m. - 12:30 a.m. Please arrive early and make sure all the necessary forms are complete.

  • You will need several documents in order to obtain your visa. Click to view  the list of necessary items. (When you first go to the page please select the following: Nationality = USA, Residence = USA, Duration = up to 90 days, Reason = Study: application to Italian Universities, then hit confirm.)

  • The necessary forms are:
    1. Visa application form (download the form and complete)
    2. Recent passport-style photo
    3. Passport or travel document valid for at least three months after visa expiry date (you will surrender your passport to the consulate)
    4. Proof of means of support in Italy of not less than 350.07 Euros for each month of the academic year (350.07 Euro = $417 US Dollars - please provide a copy of your last checking and/or savings account statement, a copy of your parents checking and/or savings account statement, and/or a notarized letter from your bank declaring that you have access to the necessary funds.)
    5. declaration of the availability in Italy of appropriate lodgings.

  • As soon as you have all the necessary forms go to the consulate  - DO NOT WAIT. While the consulate states that it can take weeks to get your visa, the NYC consulate usually processes the applications in about 10 business days. When you “drop off” all your application materials also include a pre-paid overnight express envelope addressed to yourself. This will help insure that you get your visa quickly. (Please note: both I and ISA have mailed the “acceptance” letters this week and you should get them in a few days.)

Thank you for your attention to this matter. Please let me know if you have any questions.
