TAU Sculpture

On Thursday, April 16, 2009, at 7 p.m., Seton Hall University's Master of Arts (M.A.) Program in Museum Professions and the Lennie Pierro Memorial Arts Foundation will present Tony Smith: Sowing the Seeds of Space, a lecture by Dr. Robert Storr, Dean of the Yale University School of Art and Rosalie Solow Professor of Modern Art at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University.

A leading critic, curator, and scholar, Storr will discuss the work of the 20th century sculptor Tony Smith (1912-1980), whose Tau sculpture was recently installed in Meadowland Park in the Village of South Orange. Tau commemorates the fact that Smith was born in and spent the better part of his life in South Orange, where, for a time he also maintained a studio. In 1998, Smith's work was shown at the Museum of Modern Art in a comprehensive retrospective exhibition, of which Storr was the curator.

The lecture will take place in the Chancellor Suite of Seton Hall's Bishop Dougherty University Center (ground floor). Admission is free. The lecture is sponsored by the Robert Lehman Foundation, Inc., through the Edwin L. Weisl, Jr. Lectureships in Art History Fund.

On April 17, between 5 - 7 p.m., a community celebration is scheduled for the dedication of the monumental sculpture, Tau, by Tony Smith, at the installation site, Meadowbrook Park, North Ridgewood Road, South Orange. Kiki Smith and Seton Smith, Tony Smith's daughters, and Robert Storr will join in the ceremony. Go to www.tonysmithsouthorange.org for details.
