Pope Benedict XVI Pays
Tribute to United Nations
 |
|
On April 18, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI made a historic visit to the
United Nations, where he addressed the General Assembly. Stressing the
critical role the UN plays in advancing peace, justice and human
dignity, the Pope said that “The promotion of human rights remains the
most effective strategy for eliminating inequalities between countries
and social groups, and for increasing security.”
To commemorate the first anniversary of Pope Benedict's address, the
United Nations is hosting
a symposium on April 16, which will be moderated by
Ambassador John K. Menzies, dean of the Whitehead School of Diplomacy
and International Relations. Among the participants in the
symposium are Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and Edward Cardinal Egan,
Archbishop Emeritus of New York. Mary Ann Glendon, former ambassador of
the United States to the Holy See, will present the keynote
address.
