Lisbon Earthquake

Mark Molesky, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of History and an expert in modern European history, has received a prestigious 2009 summer grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to pursue research in Portugal and the United Kingdom.

Professor Molesky's current research focuses on the Lisbon Earthquake of 1755 and its impact on European thought and culture. His work relating to the NEH grant will combine his professional expertise in European intellectual history with his interest in narrative and will result in a book: This Gulf of Fire: The Great Lisbon Earthquake and the Forging of the Modern World.
