Catholic Life Explored

This year Saints
and Sleuths, a celebration of Catholic life in literature, features
romance, terrorist plottings, trial for slander and ghostly
apparitions. It may sound like reality television, but it in fact
celebrates the Catholic authors G. K. Chesterton, Robert Hugh Benson,
John Cardinal Newman and Catherine Doherty.
The event, which spans two weekends in January, will feature dramatic
readings with commentary and discussion. Free and open to the public,
it will be held at Theatre-In-The-Round in the Bishop Dougherty
University Center.
The program schedule is:
- January 23, 8 p.m. -- Dramatic reading of The Man Who Was
Thursday. Adapted by John Dandola. Commentary by Reverend Ian Boyd
and Dr. Dermot Quinn.
- January 24, 8 p.m. -- Dramatic reading of Spectres in the
Apse. Written by John Dandola based on Robert Benson. Commentary by
Drs. Jim McGlone and Dermot Quinn.
- January 30, 8 p.m. -- Dramatic reading of Newman's Second
Spring. Written by James McGlone. Commentary by Monsignor Gerard
McCarren.
- January 31, 8 p.m. -- Dramatic reading of Baroness of God.
An original play by John Dandola based on the life of Catherine
Doherty. Commentary by Dr. David Foster.
Saints and Sleuths, now in its third year, will again feature
the dramatic talents of the Celtic Theatre Company and the literary
talents of John Dandola. The Celtic Theatre Company, who for 30 years
has presented the best of Irish drama in Seton Hall's
Theatre-In-The-Round, provides the acting talent for the dramatic
presentations.
John Dandola, an accomplished writer, has adapted or written an
original work for three of this year's four performances. Among John's
accomplishments are six mystery novels (the most recent being
TheUnbound Wind ), a biography of John Hays Hammond, four
children's histories, three non-fiction books, and the adaptation of
four Father Brown Mysteries.
This year's event is sponsored by Seton Hall University's Celtic
Theatre Company, G.K. Chesterton Institute for Faith & Culture,
Center for Catholic Studies and Center for Vocation and Servant
Leadership. For more information, please call (973) 275-2431.
