Schedule - University Day and Family Weekend 2009 

All events are open to Family Weekend participants (family of current students); only Saturday events are open to University Day participants. Some events require registration (noted with an *).


Friday, October 2

South Orange and Maplewood Art Gallery Tour*
6 - 8 p.m.

Park your car and hop on the Art Bus for a free tour of the Pierro Gallery of South Orange, the 1978 Maplewood Arts Center, Tony Smith’s TAU sculpture and the Patricia A. Bell Collection at SOPAC. The art bus will leave and return from Seton Hall Campus.

The Seton Hall University Gospel Choir Concert*
Jubilee Hall Auditorium
8:30 - 9:30 p.m.
Come listen to the Gospel Choir offer ministry in song. Enjoy light refreshments following the concert.

Saturday, October 3

University Day Kick-off
Main Stage, University Green
11:30 a.m.
Join Monsignor Robert Sheeran, President of Seton Hall University, as he kicks-off the day’s festivities. Get in the Seton Hall Spirit as the SHU cheerleaders and pep band showcase their crowd-pleasing performances. Be sure to wear your Seton Hall blue gear to campus to win prizes for most spirited Pirate.

Main Event: FreeCycle’s BMX Big Air Show
McNulty Lane, University Green
Co-Sponsored by Madison Bike Shop
2 - 3 p.m.
Get ready for an action-packed, extreme bike show that the whole family will enjoy! The FreeCycle Action Sports Team consists of trained professionals who have competed in national events such as The X-Games and Vans Triple Crown.

ARTS AND CULTURAL
WSOU’s Street Patrol Live on the Green

Main Stage, University Green

Enjoy live music from top local bands Super Satellite, The One and Nines, The Jetsetters, Scarecrow Collection and performances by student organizations. Hosted by SHU’s award-winning radio station, WSOU.

“Windows to Heaven” Art Exhibition
Walsh Library Gallery
11 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Icons have a special place in Byzantine faith that supersede other forms of religious art. This exhibit will showcase these icons and the special, unique and integral role they play in Byzantine faith. Stop by the gallery and enjoy light refreshments.

Children’s Theatre: Beauty and the Beast

Monsignor Robert Sheeran will celebrate his last University Day Mass as President in the newly restored Chapel of the Immaculate Conception.

Kids Baseball Clinic

Children ages 5-11 years old are invited to join this baseball clinic where you’ll learn to run the bases like a pro or test your arm to see how fast you throw. All you need to bring is your glove.

Get a sneak peak at the 2009-10 Seton Hall University Baseball Team as they host an inter-squad scrimmage.

“Band of Pirates” Documentary
Lerner Amphitheatre, Science and Technology Center

This 60-minute documentary is the story of Seton Hall’s magical ride to the NCAA National Championship game. Includes footage of the 1988-89 Seton Hall Pirates, as well as exclusive interviews.

Old Timers Baseball Game

Watch your favorite former Pirates as they take to the field in this year’s Old Timers Game!

Ultimate Frisbee Tournament
Waterlands Field, Downtown South Orange

Watch the newly formed Seton Hall Ultimate Frisbee Club face off against the Columbia High School Club team! Witness the first exhibition game in history between the two in downtown South Orange. Columbia High School is renowned in the Frisbee world as a factory for great players, but also as the birthplace of the sport itself.

SPECIALTY WORKSHOPS
Taste of Tai-Chi with Dr. Lee Cabell, Associate Professor*
Science and Technology Lawn
Noon - 1 p.m.
Tai Chi is a unique, traditional Chinese exercise suitable for everyone. Tai Chi teaches us to learn about body awareness and balance. It is practiced at a slow pace to improve balance, enhance breathing efficiency and promote flexibility. Join Dr. Cabell of the School of Health and Medical Sciences as he teaches 12-posture “Taste of Tai Chi,” an introductory, level 1 form, developed by Master Bow Sim Mark.

Pirate History 101: Discovering Your Seton Hall Alumni Ancestors and Recounting Your School Day Stories*

Want to find out more about relatives who attended Seton Hall? Do you have memories of Seton Hall you would like to share? This interactive workshop will explore ways you can research your ancestors using materials found in the University Archives. You also have the opportunity to leave behind your own legacy by participating in the “My Time Project.”

Can Castle Competition

Bring a canned good with you to University Day and join us for the inaugural South Orange versus Seton Hall University Can Castle Competition. Both communities will be collecting canned goods for a friendly and philanthropic competition to build the most unique can castle structure. All donations will benefit the Community Food Bank of New Jersey. To register or for additional information, contact the Office of Community Relations.

Enjoy a moderate hike through South Mountain Reservation with East Coast Outdoors professional guides. $6/person. Space is limited.

Join Monsignor Robert Sheeran for a delicious brunch with your student before the trip home. Entertainment provided by the Jeffrey Stein Jazz Trio. $9/person. Casual attire.

All events are FREE unless specified. Activities maps are available at the Farinella and Ward guard booths.
Meal tickets will be available for pick-up at the Family Weekend Information Tent in front of the University Center on Saturday, October 3, starting at 11:30 a.m.
