Josh Scher, a 2005 Seton Hall graduate, was recently named to New York Nonprofit Media's Annual 40 Under 40 Rising Stars list. The list recognizes industry professionals in academia, health care, human services and beyond who are making a difference in the lives of others. "They are already leaders," Aimee Simpierre, Editor-at-Large of NYNM commented recently. "Many are inspired by the change their work is able to engender in those they serve. Their work and success should serve as an inspiration to us all."
Last July, Scher and his fellow honorees celebrated together with friends, family and colleagues at a special breakfast hosted by New York Nonprofit Media at the Capital Grille in Manhattan.
While at Seton Hall, Scher earned dual master's degrees in Public Administration and International Relations. He is currently the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Birch Family Services, a team of more than 1,000 teachers, therapists, social workers, direct support professionals and nurses working to provide long term services and early childhood education support to individuals and families affected by autism and other developmental disabilities. "My goal," says Scher, "is to help Birch grow and expand and affect more people's lives."
"The School of Diplomacy is very proud of its alumni who continue to thrive in their fields," says Dean Andrea Bartoli. "This is the third time a Diplomacy alumnus has won an award of this stature. I think it is an indication of the outstanding character and ability of many of our graduates to make a contribution to the greater good."
During his time at Seton Hall, Scher says he met many inspiring people. "In the School of Diplomacy," he adds, "I got to know students from all over the world and worked with great professors." After earning his bachelor's degree, Scher initially planned a career in business and worked in finance for several years before returning to graduate school. He says he still enjoys working with numbers and the financial field, but wanted to expand his options and make his way into the nonprofit sector. Scher's first job after graduate school was with the Children's Aid Society where he was the Budget Director. He went on to work with the Birch Family Services in New York City, where he can apply his financial background while making a difference in the lives of the individuals and families the agency supports.
