Brownson Speech and Debate Team Breaks Records, Earning Highest Number of First Place Finishes in Tournament History.
Earlier this week, four members of the Brownson Speech and Debate Team returned victorious from Phoenix, Arizona. Jocelyn Rogalo (2019), Jon Thow (2019), Siobhan McGirl (2017) and David Encarnacao (2020) competed in 26 speech events at Grand Canyon University for the 20th Annual Christian National Speech and Debate Tournament. Our stellar speakers eclipsed all competitors by earning the title of National Speech Championship Team and the top three overall speakers in the nation. Michael Dreher, tournament director stated, "it was as dominating a performance as I think I've ever seen!"
Additionally, our students earned 10 national titles, the greatest number of first place finishes in the history of the tournament.
Jocelyn Rogalo: Champion of Poetry Interpretation, Informative Speaking, Persuasive Speaking and Dramatic Interpretation. Jocelyn was awarded Individual Sweepstakes, a title given to the overall champion.
Jon Thow: Champion of Impromptu Speaking, After Dinner Speaking, and Faith Literature Interpretation.
David Encarnacao: Champion of Communication Analysis and second place overall novice speaker
Siobhan McGirl: Champion of Prose and Program Oral Interpretation.
These pirate speakers also took home 14 additional awards and swept the top three positions in several events - including Persuasive and Informative Speaking. They also earned the awards for top three overall speakers at the tournament. They turned heads, spoke with grace and dignity and made us all proud.
