Facilities and Instrumentation

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is housed in the new Science and Technology Center.

Instrumentation

We are equipped with the latest instrumentation for chemical characterization and analysis. Instrumentation is located in our departmental instrumentation facility or in individual faculty research laboratories and are readily available to all graduate students. These include:

  1. 500 and 200 MHz NMR spectrometers
  2. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometers
  3. Ultraviolet-visible spectrometers
  4. Gas and liquid chromatographs with a variety of detectors
  5. Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer
  6. Liquid Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer
  7. Thermogravimetric Analyzer
  8. Isothermal Titration Calorimeter
  9. Differential Scanning Calorimeter
  10. Circular Dichroism Spectrometer
  11. 2 Parallel Computers (SGI Origin 3400 and a LINUX cluster)

Additional instrumentation is located within each faculty research group.

Computing and Library

Our computational center includes servers and workstations for advanced molecular modeling and computing. All full-time graduate students are issued a laptop computer through the Department of Information Technology. Our classrooms and laboratories are equipped with state of the art networking facilities and data systems.

Walsh Library houses the chemistry and biochemistry journal subscriptions and provides all graduate students with access to scientific databases including SciFinder, Science Direct and Scopus.
